About my Practice
My desire to provide hope and relief to adults, teens and children has guided my practice for over 30 years. I've successfully helped many individuals and families make profound and sustainable changes in their lives.
If you are looking for a therapist, something in your life is not going as well as you wish it were. My practice includes people who want to make changes in relationships, in work or in their feelings about themselves, in addition to those going through life changes or losses.
Perhaps you are feeling anxious, depressed, confused, empty, overwhelmed or lost. Perhaps life feels out of balance, stressful or unsatisfying. Maybe old ways of coping are no longer working, or you are worrying too much or having trouble sleeping. You might find that you repeat the same patterns or make the same mistakes over and over.
If you want more out of your personal and professional relationships, if you want to understand or others better, or if you just need to feel better, new solutions to old problems can be found through our our collaborative efforts. i work to provide a comfortable, confidential relationship within which your concerns can be safely explored so we can create new opportunities and possibilities.
My work is different with each person, attuned to your individual needs, personality and circumstances.
Children and Adolescents
In child and adolescent therapy, my approach always includes a focus on the parent child relationship and incorporates help for parents and families as needed. I understand how hard it is to be the parent of a child experiencing difficulties and to seek help. I first work to understand the source of the problem, and then make recommendations about how best to help your child. I strongly believe in early intervention, as therapy can often alleviate emotional issues which are interfereing with children's development and help them reach their full potential.
My work encompasses the full spectrum of childhood difficulties, including situational problems (eg. divorce, death, illness), normal developmental difficulties (eg.separation anxiety, sibling rivalry, nightmares), developmental delay, behavior and school problems, anxiety, depression and feeding problems.
I am trained as a play therapist and specialize in work with toddlers and preschool children, as well as children for which verbal communication is difficult. Young children can communicate what is troubling them though play which assists therapist and parents in helping them.
Concerns about Eating and Body Image
I have expertise in the treatment of eating issues, body image concerns and strict dietary and exercise habits. I work collaboratively with physicians and nutritionists to provide comprehensive care to adults, adolescents and children with anorexia, bulimia, bingeing, obesity and body image issues. I also work with people who want to explore their relationship to food and exercise.
As Co-director of the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis Eating Disorder Resource Center, I also provide supervision and consultation to therapists who work with this population.
Training and Experience
As a therapist with more than 10 years of postgraduate training in psychotherapeutic work with both adults and children, and more than 30 years in clinical practice, I now teach and supervise therapists in training through my faculty positions at The San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis and the Palo Alto Psychoanalytic Pschotherapy Training Program and in my private practice.
If you would like to talk about whether I can be helpful to you, please call to schedule an initial consultation.
