About My Practice
My practice includes adults, adolescents, and couples. I have over 20 years experience with all kinds of issues, including depression and anxiety disorders, loss, relationshp problems, addictions, sexual adjustments, and general but diffuse malaise. I have extensive experience with both heterosexual and gay and lesbian couples. I like the feistiness of adolescents.
I trained first as a historian at Harvard and the University of Chicago and then studied psychoanalysis for some ten years at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis and in New York at the Training and Research Institute for Self Psychology. I have written or edited 12 books on subjects as diverse as Abraham Lincoln and Heinz Kohut. I consider myself a self psychologist, which means I place special emphasis on empathy, opennes, trust, and mutuality in healing.
