As a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, I assist people who are dealing with anxiety, depression, or recurring patterns of difficulty in relationships, professional life, or creative work. Issues relating to self-esteem, loss, grief, sexuality, or trauma often come up in our exploration.   One specialty of mine is consultation to clarify problem areas and to suggest ways that problems can be addressed.  I offer psychoanalytic psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, couples therapy, medication consultation, and referrals to clinicians who work in specialized areas.

In my work, I see powerful interactions between the therapeutic relationship itself and the process of self-discovery which enables a person to find more nuanced and effective solutions to long-standing problems. Many of the people I see are professionals, academics, or creative artists who are interested in understanding themselves more deeply as well as achieving change.

I have had a long-standing interest in offering treatment or clinical consultation (though not both at the same time) to mental health clinicians in training or subsequent to their formal training.   My experience includes directing a psychiatry residency training program, serving as a training and supervising psychoanalyst, and teaching as a faculty member in a number of training institutions.  In addition to my clinical practice and teaching, some of my academic interests include the use of dreams and dream interpretation in indigenous cultures, and along a very separate dimension, the interface between contemporary neuroscience and psychoanalytic views of the mind.
