About My Practice

I begin our work together by listening to your concerns and your story.  After we have met several times, I will explain what I understand and what kind of treatment I think will be helpful. We will consider the impact of stress in your life, the challenges of growth into new phases of life, and also long-standing stumbling blocks in your ability to cope with life.  I am a psychiatrist and a psychoanalyst. My strength is as a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst, but we will think about other treatment options also.

For example, medication can be a useful adjunct to relieve symptoms that are incapacitating thereby freeing a person to explore the origins of those symptoms.  We will also consider what frequency of psychotherapy and what kind of psychotherapy (including psychoanalysis) will be most helpful at this point in your life. 

I believe that continuing to learn from patients is crucial to being able to help patients grow and develop.  

Professional Experience & Training

I went to medical school at Duke and did my residency at the University of North Carolina.  I trained as a psychoanalyst at the UNC- Duke Education Program, now part of the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas, and I am now a Training and Supervising Analyst in that program.  Ongoing educational activities and teaching activities help me to better identify what's going on inside that's creating difficulties for you.  As a senior psychoanalyst with over 30 years of experience, I teach and supervise other therapists and psychoanalysts.
