About My Practice

I provide individual psychotherapy and psychoanalysis to adults. My style is down-to-earth and direct, and my approach is grounded in three basic ideas.

The first is that we have the potential for emotional growth over the course of our lives. The fulfillment of this potential is rooted in relationships – particularly, but not exclusively, early relationships with caregivers. When our relationships support healthy growth, we develop capacities that able us to learn from our experiences, adapt to changes, cope with challenges, engage with others in increasingly meaningful ways and feel enriched by the complexity of our internal lives.

The second idea is that we can develop significant problems and suffer profoundly when our emotional growth is seriously curbed or blocked – especially by deficiencies, disturbances or traumatic disruptions in important relationships. The sources of such problems usually become unconscious, which complicates our efforts to understand them or heal ourselves. Although we often do not realize it at first, what we need in this situation is the involvement and perspective of another person who can help us recognize, reflect upon and recover from our difficulties.

The third idea is that psychotherapy and psychoanalysis work through providing just such a relationship. Success in doing so depends on multiple factors, the foremost of which are the provision of a safe, stable environment, a respectful, collaborative exploration of your emotional life, and a shared commitment to understanding your problems and strengthening your capacities. This is what I strive to provide in my work.

Experience & Training

I have over 15 years of clinical experience working with individuals, including work in community mental health settings, the UCSF/Mt. Zion Outpatient Psychiatry Department and private practice. I also teach graduate students and interns. I am currently in advanced, post-graduate training in psychoanalysis.
