About My Practice
I offer psychoanalysis and psychotherapy to adults and case consultation to practicing psychotherapists. I have worked in private practice for the past 28 years treating people with many different concerns and hopes for changing their lives.
Psychoanalytic therapy is a very powerful treatment that can create profound life changes. The treatment is intense and intimate and it cannot be hurried. People come to me, often in a life crisis or with relationship struggles or conflicts in their work life. Troubling life experiences like these are a window to conflicts and patterns of living that can be worked out and adjusted so that life is more livable and fulfilling. Changes come through developing a relationship in which patterns can be experienced and examined. I set the stage for this to happen from the very beginning. A wider range of life choices become available as well as a greater capacity to love, work and play with freedom and passion.
I have a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology and I am a certified Psychoanalyst. I have maintained a private practice in psychotherapy since my licensure in California in 1984. I offer psychoanalytic therapy and psychoanalysis. I am on the faculty of the Oregon Psychoanalytic Institute and the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program of Oregon Psychoanalytic center and I teach regularly in those programs. I also supervise and consult to practicing psychotherapists of any discipline. In 2000 I published Opening Gambits: the first session of psychotherapy, a guide for psychotherapists to starting therapy in the best possible way.
I have a strong interest in seeing the value of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis well understood by the public. To that end I have served in a variety of capacities in the organizations that support psychotherapist professionals. Over a period of several years I served on the Board of the Oregon Psychological Association and then as President of the Board. I am now President of the Board of the Oregon Psychoanalytic Center which trains psychoanalysts and psychotherapists and provides programs to the public to enhance understanding of these treatments.
Psychotherapy begins with your phone call and the arrangement of a first session. My voicemail is private to me alone and I will respond promptly to your call. When we meet you and I will discuss your goals and wishes and negotiate how best to proceed.
