Philosophy and approach:
Unhappy with yourself and the way life is unfolding? Career, relationships, or creative life not what you want them to be? Anxious? Unmotivated? Sad? Together we can help you understand what's going on and what's getting in your way. In addition to patience, empathy, humor, reliability, and both personal and intellectual curiosity, I bring to my work the training and expertise to work with both individuals and couples around a wide-range of concerns. Areas of special interest include interpersonal conflict, loneliness, creative blocks, eating/body image issues, LGBTQ concerns, habitual procrastination, self-esteem, sexual difficulties, and the particular dilemmas of artists and academics.
My approach is individualized and interactive with a focus on long-term sustainable change. I take as a basic premise that you are more than a collection of symptoms or a problem to be fixed and believe that all you bring to the table deserves our full attention and exploration.
Psychotherapy and psychoanalysis are uniquely rewarding endeavors. It can be exciting, exhilarating, even fun, to try on unfamiliar perspectives, to eliminate habits and attitudes that no longer serve you, and to learn to know and care about yourself in a very different manner. At the same time, to examine and reveal your inner world, to trust another to share in that process, to make the inherently difficult effort to change—these things require considerable courage and are possible only in an environment of empathy, respect, and confidentiality where the delicate balance between encouraging growth and respecting limits is thoughtfully attended to.
Self-knowledge is good medicine. Therapy takes courage but can help you, like nothing else can, attain a sustainable sense of well-being and a freer and more satisfying life.
